The short answer

To uninstall Superwhisper on a Mac, quit it from its menu bar icon and delete Superwhisper from Applications. That removes the app and leaves your data. To remove the data as well, delete the ~/superwhisper folder in your home directory, which holds your recordings, history, modes and vocabulary. Deleting the app does not cancel a subscription; that is done in the billing portal. Flit, a local dictation app for Mac, keeps everything it stores in one folder too, and has no account or subscription to close.

How to uninstall Superwhisper on a Mac

  1. If you pay for Pro, cancel it first at superwhisper.com/billing, or in the App Store if you bought it there.
  2. If you might come back, copy the ~/superwhisper folder somewhere safe. It holds everything you would want again.
  3. Click the Superwhisper icon in the menu bar and choose Quit.
  4. Open the Applications folder and move Superwhisper to the Trash.
  5. To remove your data too, choose Go → Home in Finder and delete the superwhisper folder.
  6. Empty the Trash.

Older installs keep the folder at ~/Documents/superwhisper. If you chose your own location, it is shown in Settings → Advanced settings, under App folder location, so check before you delete the app.

Superwhisper keeps its app and its data apart, which makes removal simple and also easy to leave half done. The table shows what each step removes. The steps are from Superwhisper’s own clean-uninstall instructions.

What each step removes

What you deleteWhat goesWhat stays
The app, from Applications Superwhisper itself Recordings, history, modes, vocabulary
The ~/superwhisper folder Recordings, history, modes, vocabulary, replacements Your account and any subscription
The subscription, in the billing portal Future charges The account, on the free plan
The account, by email to support Your email on Superwhisper’s records Anonymized billing records

What is in the data folder

Superwhisper’s documentation says the folder holds your history, recordings, modes, vocabulary and replacements. Recordings are audio files of what you dictated, so if privacy is the reason you are uninstalling, this is the step that matters.

Its warning is plain: deleting the data folder is permanent, and recordings, history, custom modes and vocabulary go with it. Reinstalling the app never touches the folder, so leaving it in place means a reinstall picks up where you left off.

Back up first, if you might return

Copy the whole folder to another drive before deleting it. Superwhisper describes the same folder as the way to move your modes, vocabulary and history to a new machine, so a copy of it is a complete backup.

Your license is not in the folder. A Lifetime key does not expire, and Superwhisper says a lost key of any kind can be recovered.

The subscription and the account are separate

Removing the app changes nothing about billing. A subscription bought on the website is cancelled in the billing portal, and one bought in the iPhone or Android app through Apple or Google. The cancellation guide has each route.

To delete the account as well, Superwhisper’s page says to email its support from the address on the account. It notes that transcripts and audio are stored on your device and not on its servers, so the folder above is where those are removed.

The permissions in System Settings

Superwhisper’s instructions stop at the app and the folder. macOS can keep an app’s entries under System Settings → Privacy & Security, in Microphone and Accessibility, after the app is gone. They do nothing without the app. If you want them gone, select the entry in the Accessibility list and click the minus button.

Reinstalling instead

If you are uninstalling to fix a problem, a clean reinstall may be enough: download Superwhisper again and drag it into Applications over the old copy. Your settings are in the data folder, so nothing is lost. Superwhisper not working covers the usual causes first.

Replacing it? What Flit is

Flit does the core job you installed Superwhisper for, finished text in any app while you hold a key, and does all of it on your Mac.

  • Nothing you say is sent to a server, and it works with Wi-Fi off.
  • No account to create, and so none to delete later.
  • A native Mac app. Everything it stores is in one folder, ~/Library/Application Support/Flit.
  • One payment, with no subscription to cancel before you uninstall.
  • Flit is free for 7 days with every feature on, then $19 once, with no account and no subscription.

Good to know

  • Flit has no custom modes, no cloud models and no meeting recording. If you used those in Superwhisper, Flit does not replace them.
  • Flit runs on a Mac with Apple silicon and macOS 14 or later. There is no Windows, iPhone or Android app today; Windows is in the works.
  • The voice model is a download of about 0.5 to 2.3 GB that you choose once. After that Flit needs no connection.
  • Flit holds no SOC 2, ISO 27001 or HIPAA certificate. Nothing you say reaches a server, so there is no server to certify. If your organization requires a certificate, Flit does not have one.
