Alternatives/Flit vs Typeless
Flit vs Typeless
Flit sends nothing and counts nothing, and works with no internet.
The short answer
Flit is the local, buy-once answer to Typeless. Typeless sends your speech to its servers and meters it by the word: 8,000 words a week free, unlimited for $12 a month billed yearly. It covers macOS, Windows, iOS and Android, which Flit does not. What Flit removes is the whole apparatus: no account, no meter, no queue, and no retention policy to trust, because no request is made at all. If you write across 4 platforms, Typeless is built for that. If your writing happens on a Mac, Flit is the one where nobody is counting.
Flit vs Typeless, side by side
From Typeless’s own published information, checked August 2026. “Not stated” means they do not publish that detail. Prices change, so confirm before you buy.
Why people pick Flit
- Nothing is sent, so there is nothing to retain. Zero retention is a policy someone maintains; making no request is a property you can verify.
- Nobody counts your words. There is no weekly cap, no meter, and no tier that unlocks more of your own speech.
- It works with no internet at all, on a plane or in a basement.
- No account. Typeless requires one before you can dictate a word.
- One payment, and Flit is yours to keep. Typeless Pro is a subscription that only covers the time you pay for.
- A local codebase index and more than 60 spoken commands resolved by fixed rule.
Where Typeless differs
- Mac, Windows, iPhone and Android.
- A free tier of 8,000 words a week, dictionary included.
- Team billing, SSO, SCIM, audit logs and HIPAA controls on paid tiers.
The pricing page tells you where the words go
Typeless never uses the word cloud, but its own pricing page settles it. A free tier capped at 8,000 words a week has to be counted somewhere, and a paid tier selling priority access during high demand has to be queued somewhere. Neither is possible for a model running on your machine. Their retention promise is a policy someone maintains rather than a property of the software. Flit makes no request to dictate, so retention, queue position and outage are questions that never arise.
Being metered by the word is its own cost
Pro is $12 a month billed yearly, or $30 monthly, and it lasts as long as you keep paying. Flit is $19 once for up to 2 Macs, and it is yours to keep. But the meter matters as much as the money. 8,000 words a week is roughly 1,100 a day, which a working writer passes before lunch, and the free tier exists so that you feel that ceiling. Flit has no ceiling to feel, because there is no counter.
Four platforms against one
Four platforms against one is a real gap, and if your day spans a Mac and a phone this comparison ends there. Flit is Mac only today, which is why the notch HUD, the accessibility layer and the Apple silicon models fit as well as they do. A Windows version is being built, and no phone app is planned. On languages Flit now covers more, more than 1,600 against their 100+, and every one of ours runs on your machine. The widest coverage comes from Meta’s Omnilingual model, so accuracy varies by language.

Questions
Is Typeless local or cloud?
Cloud. Their site avoids the word, but its pricing page counts your words weekly and sells priority access during high demand, and neither is possible without a server doing the transcribing. The zero retention promise is about what happens to your speech after it arrives, not about whether it is sent. Flit makes no network request at all, which you can confirm with a network monitor in a minute.
Which is cheaper?
Typeless is free if you stay under 8,000 words a week. Past that, Flit is cheaper: $19 once, yours to keep, against Pro at $12 a month billed yearly for as long as you pay. Flit has no free tier and no word limit: you buy it once and dictate as much as you like.
Does Flit work on Windows or my phone?
Not yet. Flit is macOS only today, on Apple silicon, with a Windows version in the works and a waitlist at flit.fyi/windows. Typeless covers macOS, Windows, iOS and Android now, so if your writing spans devices that is a real reason to choose it.
