# Dictation app for students on Mac

Canonical page: https://flit.fyi/use-cases/students

**Write your essays by speaking.** The blank page is rarely a thinking problem. You can usually explain the argument out loud to a friend in 2 minutes, and then spend an hour failing to type the same thing. Flit closes that gap: you talk through the paragraph and finished, punctuated prose appears in the document, at roughly 4 times typing speed.

## What slows students down

- You can explain the argument out loud but not get it onto the page.
- Every tool that would help is a monthly subscription on a student budget.
- Writing in a second language is slower than thinking in it.
- Transcripts arrive as one unbroken block with no punctuation.

## What Flit does for students

### Prose, not a transcript

Punctuation, capitals and paragraph breaks are applied before the text lands, and “um” and “you know” are dropped. What appears in the document is a sentence you can keep, not a wall you have to edit into one.

### Think in your language, write in it

More than 1,600 languages, all running on your Mac. Flit works out which one you are speaking and formats in that language, using its punctuation rules. It never translates unless you ask it to, so an essay in German stays in German. The widest coverage comes from Meta’s Omnilingual model, so accuracy varies by language.

### Course terms it has never heard

Add the theorists, chemicals, case names and abbreviations from your reading list to your personal dictionary. They come out spelled correctly instead of phonetically.

### One price, and it stays bought

$19 once, for every feature. No Pro tier, no monthly bill through your degree, and no account to keep alive. It also runs with no internet, which matters more in a library basement than anywhere else.

## Finished text, not a transcript

Said: "so um the main argument here is that urban density reduces per capita emissions comma but only above a certain threshold"

Flit wrote, in Notion: The main argument here is that urban density reduces per capita emissions, but only above a certain threshold.

Fillers dropped, spoken comma placed, sentence capitalized. Nothing to clean up afterwards.

## Why choose Flit over Wispr Flow

A student budget and a monthly subscription do not mix. Flit is paid once, needs no account, and keeps working through every term.

## Questions

**Can it transcribe my recorded lectures?**

Yes. Since 1.5, drop a recorded lecture, audio or video, on the Transcribe tab and Flit turns it into a transcript on your Mac, in a few minutes for a two-hour lecture. Nothing is uploaded, and the text is saved to a folder you choose.

**Is it good enough if English is not my first language?**

It is one of the better reasons to use it. Speaking is usually faster than typing in a second language, and Flit handles more than 1,600 languages, so you can dictate in whichever one you think in and write the essay in the one it is due in.

**Does it work without internet?**

Completely. Every model runs on your Mac, so dictation works on a train, on a plane and in the parts of a university building where the wifi gives up.
