# Legal dictation software for Mac

Canonical page: https://flit.fyi/use-cases/lawyers

**Client notes never leave your Mac.** Dictation is older than the laptop in legal work, and the reason it never went away is that speaking a memo is faster than typing one. What changed is where the audio goes. Most modern dictation tools send your voice to a vendor to be transcribed, which means the vendor now holds the sentence you just spoke about your client. Flit does the transcription on your own machine, so that sentence has nowhere to go.

## What slows lawyers down

- Cloud dictation means privileged material passes through a third party.
- Legal dictation suites are priced per seat, per month, forever.
- Times, dates and party names come back wrong and need a pass by hand.
- The tool paraphrases, when what you needed was your own words.

## What Flit does for lawyers

### The audio never goes anywhere

Recognition and formatting both run on your Mac. Flit makes no network request to dictate, has no account, and sends no telemetry. You do not have to take that on trust: run a network monitor while you dictate and watch it stay quiet.

### Times and dates, by rule

Say “ten thirty AM on Friday” or “1030 AM” and you get 10:30 AM either way. Spoken times, dates and numbers are handled by fixed rules rather than a model that might round, reword, or invent.

### Party names and citations, spelled once

Add matter names, opposing counsel, and the terms of art you use daily to your personal dictionary. Flit spells them your way every time, including the ones no general model has ever seen.

### Standard paragraphs on a phrase

Snippets expand a spoken trigger into a full block of text: your engagement wording, your confidentiality footer, your standard instructions. Dictated in a second, identical every time.

## Finished text, not a transcript

Said: "call with the client at 1030 am friday to discuss the settlement offer"

Flit wrote, in Mail: Call with the client at 10:30 AM Friday to discuss the settlement offer.

Spoken times become real times by fixed rule. No model decides what you meant.

## Why choose Flit over Wispr Flow

Client confidences should not pass through an outside service. Flit transcribes and formats on your Mac, so there is no vendor to vet and nothing to disclose.

## Check it yourself

Before you trust a word of this page, put a network monitor on it and dictate something. Nothing moves. We hold no certification and are not asking you to take one on faith; we are asking you to check.

## Questions

**What exactly leaves my machine when I dictate?**

Nothing. The speech model, the formatting and your dictionary all live on your Mac. Flit has no server, no account and no analytics. Screen context, when it is used, is read into memory for one dictation and discarded.

**Does Flit meet my confidentiality obligations?**

We can tell you what the software does, not what your regulator requires. Flit transmits nothing, so no third party receives client information from it. Whether that satisfies your professional duties is a question for your own risk advice, and we do not certify Flit against any standard.

**Can it transcribe a recorded deposition or hearing?**

Yes, if you have the recording. Since 1.5, Flit transcribes audio and video files on your Mac, with nothing uploaded, and saves a text file. It does not label speakers, so a hearing comes back as one flow of text, with timestamps in the SRT and VTT exports.
