# Dictation app for developers on Mac

Canonical page: https://flit.fyi/use-cases/developers

**Say file names. Get them spelled right.** Most dictation tools fall apart the moment you say a file name. They hear “user auth service dot swift” and write it exactly that way, so you stop and fix it by hand, which is slower than having typed it. Flit reads the project you have open and spells the name the way your repo spells it.

## What slows developers down

- Every identifier comes out as four separate lowercase words.
- Dictation tools reword your shell commands into prose.
- Punctuation-heavy code means reaching for the keyboard anyway.
- Cloud tools want your keystrokes and the context of your repo.

## What Flit does for developers

### Your project, indexed locally

Dictating into an editor or terminal, Flit reads the open project’s file and folder names, so “user auth service dot swift” becomes UserAuthService.swift. File names and paths only, never file contents, and the index never touches disk or network.

### Terminals stay verbatim

In terminals and editors your words are never reworded. “git log dash dash oneline” becomes git log --oneline, exactly, and lands in about 0.15 seconds.

### Punctuation and casing, spoken

More than 60 spoken commands handled by fixed rules, not a model: open paren, dollar sign, dash dash force. Say “camel case” or “snake case” to control how the rest of the sentence joins up.

### Shaped as a prompt for AI chats

Dictating into Claude, ChatGPT, or Cursor structures your words as a clear prompt and keeps code terms verbatim. It never answers the request for you.

## Finished text, not a transcript

Said: "open voice snicket store dot swift"

Flit wrote, in Cursor: `open VoiceSnippetStore.swift`

Flit indexes your open project, so it fixes the mishearing against the real file name.

## Why choose Flit over Wispr Flow

Flit indexes the project you have open, on your Mac, so spoken file and folder names come out spelled the way your repo spells them. Terminals stay verbatim, and nothing about your code is sent anywhere.

## Check it yourself

Run Flit with the network off, or point Little Snitch at it while you dictate. The dictation still works and the monitor stays silent. That is the whole claim, and it takes a minute to falsify.

## Questions

**Does Flit read my source code?**

No. It reads file and directory names, and the path of the document you have open. File contents are never read. The index lives in memory, is never written to disk, and never leaves your Mac.

**Which editors work?**

Terminal, iTerm, Warp, Xcode, VS Code, Cursor, Zed, Sublime, and JetBrains IDEs, plus any other app with a cursor. Terminals without a document still get verbatim mode.

**Will it mangle my commit messages or comments?**

In editors and terminals Flit runs in verbatim mode, so nothing is reworded. Prose formatting applies in chat, mail, and docs, where you want it.
