# Flit vs Speechify

Canonical page: https://flit.fyi/alternatives/speechify

Flit is for writing, not reading: your words typed, nothing uploaded. Checked against Speechify's own site in September 2026. Flit is ours.

**Short answer:** These two run the same pipeline in opposite directions, which is why they turn up in the same search. Speechify reads text to you: 1,000-plus voices, 60-plus languages, up to 5x speed, on every platform and in the browser, for $29 a month or $139 a year, with a free tier limited to ten robotic voices at 1.5x. Flit listens to you and writes, on a Mac, for $15 once. Speechify Premium does now bundle Voice Typing, so the overlap is not zero, but reading is the product and dictation is a line item. If you want documents read aloud, buy Speechify and do not let a dictation comparison talk you out of it. If you want to stop typing, that is Flit.

## Why people pick Flit

- Dictation is the product rather than a feature inside a reader, so the formatting, the spoken punctuation, the per-app tone and the project index all exist.
- Nothing is uploaded. Speechify processes in the cloud and needs an account.
- $15 once against $139 a year, which is $417 over three years.
- It works with no connection at all.

## Where Speechify differs

- Reads text aloud in over a thousand voices and sixty-odd languages, up to 5x.
- Reading aloud for dyslexia, low vision and eye strain.
- Every platform, plus a Chrome extension and a web app.
- Scan and Listen, AI summaries, and Drive, Dropbox and OneDrive integrations.

## What decides it

### Opposite halves of the same problem

Text to speech and speech to text sound like the same category and are almost unrelated as products. One takes writing and produces audio; the other takes audio and produces writing. The engineering, the failure modes and the reasons people buy them barely overlap. We have put Speechify on this site because people search across the two, and the useful answer is usually not "pick one". If reading is slow for you and typing is slow for you, those are two problems, and a reader and a dictation app are two purchases that do not compete.

### The Voice Typing overlap

Speechify Premium lists Voice Typing, described on their pricing page as writing 5x faster with dictation, and their site was advertising its launch when we checked. So it is not true that Speechify does not dictate. It is that dictation arrives as one item among AI podcasts, a voice assistant, summaries and a thousand voices, priced as part of a $29-a-month reading subscription and processed in the cloud. If dictation is the reason you are shopping, a $15 app that does only that will go deeper. If you were buying Speechify anyway, Voice Typing is one more item in that subscription, not a reason to choose it.

## The verdict

you want text read aloud, in any voice, on any device, or reading is the part that is slow for you

you want to stop typing on a Mac, with nothing uploaded and one payment

## Questions

**Is Speechify a dictation app?**

Primarily it is a text-to-speech reader: it reads documents, web pages and PDFs aloud. Premium also bundles Voice Typing for dictation. Flit does dictation and file transcription, on your Mac.

**What does Speechify cost?**

Premium is $29 a month, or $139 a year. The free tier is limited to ten robotic-sounding voices at up to 1.5x, with text-to-speech features only. Flit is $15 once for one Mac.

**Can Flit read text aloud?**

No. Flit writes what you say and nothing else. For the other direction, Speechify does that, as does the macOS built-in Spoken Content for simpler needs.

**Should I buy both?**

If reading and typing are both slow for you, yes, and we would rather say so than pretend one app covers it. They solve different halves and neither replaces the other.
